Mastatal and the surrounding area have tremendous beauty and biological diversity that you can experience through
a variety of guided activities. This is ecotourism in its purest form - you will be led by local guides through the
striking mountains, forests, and rivers of Costa Rica’s seldom visitied Central Pacific region.
You will have the opportunity to observe the different birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and insects who live
and travel among the trails, trees and bodies of water in our area. During your trips to our waterfalls, canyons,
mountain peaks, rivers and lakes, you will have the opportunity to observe the many species of plants and animals
indigenous to our region.
- La Cangreja National Park: You can hike the lower trails of this rarely visited national park, or if
you choose to climb the peak of the Cangreja, you will experience the stunning views of the Pacific Coast and the
forests and pueblos of our region.
- Aquatic Birdwatching: You will leave Cabañas Siempre Verde early in the morning on horseback,
cross the waters of the Rio Negro and travel through a local farm with herds of cattle. Local birds congregate on
the small lake where you will bird watch and enjoy an organic, traditional Costa Rican meal. After lunch, you can enjoy
swimming in the refreshing waters of the Rio Negro and visit a nearby waterfall.
- El Gran Canyon (The Big Canyon): Beginning with a 2 hour hike, this trip will bring you through territory
where you can observe the abundant animal life in this virgin Costa Rican rainforest. After a 30 minute walk upstream,
you will discover one of the most beautiful places among these mountains, a large canyon with a majestic waterfall.
- Hot Springs: You will leave Cabañas Siempre Verde early in the morning on horseback and ride to
the nearby pueblo of San Miguel. On the way you will see the beautiful sights of La Cangreja National Park and the
surrounding mountains. In San Miguel, you will cross a cattle farm before reaching the hot springs of the Rio Negro
where you can sit in the natural thermal pools and swim in the cool water of the river.
- Catarata Grande (The Big Waterfall): You will leave Cabaņas Siempre Verde early in the morning on
horseback and ride to the nearby pueblo of San Miguel where we will travel through local farms to a hiking trail
which leads you down to the more than 100 meter high majestic waterfalls known as the Catarata Grande. After lunch,
you can swim in the cool pools and jump from the surrounding rocks before hiking back up to the horses.
- Zapatón Indigenous Reserve: Traveling by car, you will arrive in Zapatón in time to eat lunch with a
local family. The people who live on this reservation belong to the Huetar tribe. Then you will visit the community
