Since La Cangreja became a national park in 2003, visitors have slowly begun to discover our lovely community. Mastatal is a small pueblo in the San Jose province with a population of approximately 150 people. Most people work on agriculture and cattle farms in addition to maintaining their own small farms.

Mastatal has a small one-room elementary school, a high school, community center, church, soccer field, small store and bar, Rancho Mastatal, and the entrance to La Cangreja. With one main road and very little traffic, Mastatal is a tranquil community filled with friendly people.
